We summarize all the information from the State of Play for you.

Developers Avalanche Software spent a full 20 minutes revealing new information about Hogwarts Legacy during a State of Play. So that you have an overview of everything that was shown, we have summarized everything that is important for you here in the overview. Below you will also find the new trailer including the State of Play.

The most important information at a glance:

  • release: Christmas 2022
  • Large open world: Hogwarts and the surrounding area
  • Fly: Via brooms or on griffins
  • Housing: You can build your own house
  • crafting: Mixes ingredients into powerful potions and spells
  • Puzzle: At Hogwarts and outside there is puzzles
  • Action-packed combat system: Many attack and defensive spells, as well as stealth
  • lessons: Here you will learn new spells, among other things
  • Lots of minigames: A game of hide-and-seek with Poltergeist Peeves and much more.

The Open World: “A dream for Potter fans”

During the 15-minute trailer, we were able to gain all sorts of impressions not only of the magic school itself, but also of the seemingly huge surroundings of Hogwarts. So we should not only be allowed to explore the corridors and halls, the Great Hall, the clock tower or the hospital wing, encountering all kinds of puzzles, small villages and areas away from the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade are also in the game.

Exploration in flight: To move faster, we grab the broom and fly around. The flight with a griffin could also be seen.

This is what the developers say about exploring the open game world. (via PS Blog)

We wanted you to be able to discover new places, see what can be found around and beyond the Black Lake, meet new witches and wizards in the dwellings scattered across the landscape beyond Hogsmeade, and learn what other undiscovered chambers in Hogwarts or scattered in the Scottish Highlands.

The combat system: Lots of action and a question mark

Also, during the state of play, plenty of combat was shown against other wizards and creatures that we experience from the third person, casting spells and also manipulating objects from the environment in our favor. It will also be possible to sneak and silently kill enemies from behind. We probably learn the attacks in lessons and from our classmates, among other things, but how the talent system works is still an open question.

The fights seem action-packed, but the pace is also quite slow.

Leisurely Battles: For us, the big question mark is still behind the dynamics of the fights, which seemed very static, especially due to the behavior of the AI. Only when you play it will you see how much fun it is. There is also still a question mark behind the variety of offensive and defensive spells. According to the developer, however, the necessary depth in the combat system was provided. Difficulty levels were also confirmed via PS Blog.

Extensive customization options

As already known, at the beginning of the game we can create our own sorceress or spell using the character editor. As the game progresses, we can then further customize our hat and cape gear.

Choice of Hogwarts house: Of course, at the beginning we can also choose between the four houses Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin, which gives us access to the respective common rooms. It remains to be seen what impact the election will have.

Housing and many other mechanics

As was also seen, we are allowed to build our own house outside of Hogwarts. What advantages this brings and how extensive the housing is, we are curious.

Apart from that, many other mechanics were seen during the State of Play, including crafting or brewing potions. It will also be possible to craft attack items for the fights, such as mandrake seedlings to incapacitate opponents with a shout.

JK Rowling’s transphobia: The success of Hogwarts Legacy indirectly benefits Harry Potter author JK Rowling, who participates through existing publishing rights and the associated sale of the books. Rowling has attracted attention in the past for his transphobic statements. If you want to find out more about the topic, you will find further information here, among other things.
